Start with three common questions about business and life in China.
01Can I own 100% of a company in China without a Chinese partner?
Yes. A foreign individual can own 100% of a company in China in industries that allow wholly foreign-owned investment. A Chinese shareholder is not generally required for trading, consulting and many technology businesses, although the specific activities must be checked.
You can be the sole shareholder and, if eligible, also serve as the company’s legal representative. Ownership and legal representation are different roles with different responsibilities.
Owning the company does not automatically give you the right to work or reside in China; those applications are assessed separately.
Explore company ownership →02Can I get a work permit and residence permit through my own company in China?
Yes. Your own company in China can act as your employer and support applications for a work permit and a work-type residence permit, provided the company is in good standing and meets the employer requirements, and you qualify under the applicable foreign work permit category (A, B or C) and the local application requirements.
Explore your residence options →03Which cities in China are more suitable for my business and residence plans?
Every city has its strengths and trade-offs. There is no single best choice for everyone.
Some cities offer stronger business connections and convenient transport, but may come with higher living and operating costs. Others may better suit your budget or business plans. Work and residence requirements also need to be assessed locally.
